As for the movie itself, it was entertaining, the cinematography was good, as Best Picture of the Year... questionable.

being a del toro fan, i was completely disappointed with this utterly postmodern politically correct rubbish. it did not deserve the oscar.

Movie was good... Great Acting & if you are familiar with Guillermo Del Torro's movies like Pan's Labyrinth, Crimson Peak or Devil's Backbone. It can be violent, sex scenes & weird.
And yes the movie had some weird moments.
Spoiler alert(maybe) - this movie reminded me of a combination of ET & Splash(Tom Hanks & Daryl Hanna movie). It was a mythical fantasy movie- not to be taken seriously- Still good movie.

Hummm, not what I expected. To much unreal fable. Charming. Somewhat romantic.

E.T. with gratuitous violence. Found in the freshwater Amazon, but requires salt water? Where were the continuity people?? That said, I still love to watch Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, and Octavia Spencer. Wanted to like it more than I did. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Frustratingly disappointing. After all the hype, I expected better. The aesthetic and cinematography was great, and some good acting moments, but I was put off by the "graphic novel" style violence, profanity and sexuality. This could have been a subtle and poignant story about love and acceptance, but i found the sweet moments overshadowed by the harsh and abrasive.

Loved this movie, spectacular acting. I think that Sally Hawkins should have won the Oscar for it.

This award winning film is about Elisa, a mute woman who is isolated while working as a cleaning lady in a government security lab in 1962 Baltimore. Upon discovering a scaly man from South America that lives within the lab, her world begins to change and feelings develop. She quickly realizes that his life is at stake unless she can do something about it. This film is beautiful and captivating, with its themes of fantasy, heartbreak, and power. The visuals will have you glued to the screen and waiting for more. I would rate this movie 4.5/5 stars

I found this movie a disappointment and would not have got my vote for 'best picture'. Del Toro must have a rich fantasy life, but it didn't translate into worthy movie material imo.
A teenager would love it.

54 quotes in IMDb already (thanks to the contributors.) However, some of the best quotes are silent signs. You just have to watch them, like this one:

Zelda: [Elisa looks noticeably happier] Why you smilin', hon? Well stop lookin' like that. What happened?

[Elisa shakes her head to say "nothing"]

Zelda: Why? How? How? Does he - have a...?

[Elisa nods and uses her hands to describe what the Amphibian Man's penis looks like]

Zelda: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

[pause]

Zelda: Lor'...! Never trust a man. Even when he looks flat down there.

[laughs]

"Decent?

"A man has the decency not to fuck up. Now that's one thing, that's real decent of him.

"But the other kind of decency, it doesn't really matter. We sell it, but it's an export. We sell it because we don't use it."

-Character of General Hoyt
