Details the gritty rural lives and loves of Tommo and Charlie -- two young brothers -- and their poor Devonshire family from 1909 until 1916, when the outbreak of war destroys their country idyll. Both join up (one under age) leaving behind the beautiful Molly who is the love of both their lives. The young men survive gas attacks, shelling, German troops and the appalling deaths of their close friends. But one thing they cannot escape is summary military justice.

While this is described as a classic love triangle, I found the competitive yet fiercely committed relationship between the two brothers the larger, compelling story. The film starts in the class-stratified society of 1908 England, where the boys grow up in a poor and loving family; their parents insist on education over field labor. The local colonel gives a pitch-perfect depiction of a pompous, entitled windbag whose lucky act was marrying into landed gentry. WWI arrives and both boys enlist....

A rather morbid tale with no apparent ending.

Interesting story, a view of which I had never considered

Difficult movie to watch. Sadly, it tells a story that happened many times in real life.

Very sad! Love of two brothers enduring life without a father and war.

If you are looking for sadness, this would be a good choice. Now I definitely appreciate the telling of the horrors of WW1, and the first half of the film was very good, but the writing/ directing/ and story telling of the second half left me wanting. It is as if it were done by two separate teams of people. I think they tried to do too much and it felt they hurried to the end too quickly. Not one I would recommend.

This is a war drama directed by Pat O'Connor, originally produced as a motion picture in 2012, based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Michael Morpurgo.
The film especially underlines the senselessness of war and ineptitude of the commanding officer.
It is an unflinching examination of the horrors of war and the injustice surrounding the execution of soldiers by firing squad on the false grounds of desertion or cowardice.

A trifle, adding nothing to the ground covered already by countless other films; redeemed only by O'Connell's performance.

Very well done. What a pity this history is so overlooked in our schools. All across the UK in every tiny burg to great there's a memorial to the fallen & ceremonies each year. Not so much in US.....
