Once More With Feeling: a helter-skelter caboodle of waggish anecdotes set in and around Winnipeg. The lack of homogeneous cohesion is actually the book's great asset, for, as anyone will tell you, humor is a very personal thing. What's uproariously funny to one person, verges on the disgusting for the next. Case in point, reading this book, with interest seriously flagging by the hundred page mark, I was about to chuck it when p 119 produced a hearty belly laugh. Immediately offering a browse through of said page to a friend didn't even elicit a smile, but a look of bewilderment and disdain. After perusal momentum waned again, pp 157-158 to the rescue. And so it went to the end. At which point it became evident that there's indeed a trickle of an undercurrent throughout Cook's novel, best summed up by an old Schlitz Beer intonation: 'You only go 'round once in life. Go for the gusto.' Otherwise, were consigned to practising limnology along the shoreline of oblivion.

This book is more like loosely connected short stories than a novel, and it took me several chapters to feel drawn in. But Cook's writing is incredible, and it was the beauty of her writing that kept me reading (Chapter 9 is a masterpiece). By the end, I was completely invested in the world of characters that she had built. I don't know that I will ever read this book from cover to cover again, but I will certainly open it at random and read a few pages just to experience Cook's mastery of language.
