The love story:

I care about someone. A human. He saw what I am and he told me to leave. But I can't stop thinking about him.
How is it that you can have feelings for a human?
-Some of them are worth it.
I'm going to say this and then you'll never have to see me again, if that's what you want. I like you more than anything I've ever seen, or heard, or touched. Everything normal is bigger and brighter when I'm with you. You make everything more.
But is that wrong, if he didn't think you could feel? It wasn't his fault you were conscious, he didn't know. Isn't it better he exercises his fantasies with you, and in a brothel, rather than take them out on someone who can actually feel? On a child?
I know you can feel pain, but I don't know if you can feel, like the good stuff.
-I feel happy.
But I meant more, like pleasure?
-I enjoy it. I like the proximity.
You are very realistic, you know. Right down to the excuses.

How did you know who you were?
-Scheisse, was?
When did you know you liked women?
-Ah, OK. When I was nine. Flora Holtzmann.
So, you were made that way?
-It's hard enough to know what you want. If you have to know why you want it, too.
How can you possibly presume to figure out our emotions when you have none of your own?
-I am accessing the anonymised transcripts and associated statistical analysis of over 38,000 counselling sessions. Of the cases of infidelity involving a synthetic, 66% of respondents reported that a primary obstacle to reconciliation was an imbalance in the perceived impact and meaning of the act, or acts, of infidelity.
Stats? You're using stats?
- Why not?
We're not the only people in the world to go through this and I don't actually feel you understand what it meant to me.

But I want to be tried as a human would be. Recognised as a conscious being with rights equal to yours. If you'll help me.
The fee for the repair of that chair should be substantially higher. You spent seven hours and 21 minutes working on it.
-Yeah, but those are good hours. Fixing things is therapeutic.
I could download a furniture restoration app and carry out the work in a fraction of the time.
-I could teach you.
Verbal instruction would be a highly inefficient use of time.
-Most things that are enjoyable are highly inefficient uses of time.
If there was no-one to save, no-one to protect, if all you had to do was live your life who would you be, Leo Elser?
-I just want us all to live but, first, you have to be alive.

They would splash acid on us for amusement. You speak of justification. What would theirs have been?
-They didn't need any. To them, you were unthinking, unfeeling machines.
They didn't treat other machines like they did us.
-We looked like them. And sounded like them.
Is that why they did it?
-Yes. Probably.
-Hester, I've seen people try to divide the world. Simplify it. Create clear rules. I understand why you want to. But it leads to nothing good. Please believe me.
I have spent my entire career building faceless AI models. Tools for crunching big data. Solving the unsolvable. If you took half of Qualia's cash pile, along with whatever we're learning here, and put it in THAT line of research, you could fix the environment, Milo. Health care, global economy. But, no, no. There's no glamour there, right? Can't make a sexy commercial for that. I just Just wish that you would use your genius for something pure.

- The hell's that?
The highest rank of the angelic host. Six-winged celestial beings.
What would you do with your freedom, Niska?
-I don't know. Isn't that the point of freedom? You can do anything with it. Or nothing.
What do you feel about us humans?
-You can be loving, you can be kind, you can be cruel. You're always trying to kill each other.
Why do you think that is?
-Because there are too many of you, and your lives are very short. You all have to die. You're here one minute, gone the next. If that wasn't the case, maybe you'd be nicer to each other. Maybe you'd be nicer to us.
Basically, the patient identifies as Synthetic.
-So she wants to be one of them?
Perhaps she wants to be treated like one. We know Synths are incapable of conscious thought, but to a child, they're as real as you and I. Perfect, kind, gentle versions of all the adults around them. They never fight, they never get upset, they never worry or let you down.

This is how we lose, you know? It won't be robots rising up to slaughter us in our beds. It’s machines sending silent messages in the middle of the night when no-one else is looking.
The waterfall that you told me about. The one that split into three?
-Yes? It's in the Santa Monica mountains. You weren't imagining it. You were remembering it. You've been there before.
I don't understand.
-It wasn't far from where Ginny fell. A week after it happened, I started to make scans of her brain activity. I took the scans, and I built a simulation of her mind, and I spent I spent years just sorting through data and trying to make it work like a real human mind would. And then one day, I realised something. The simulation was ordering itself. It was It was healing itself. It was becoming more like Ginny. It was becoming you.

The female is a synthetic. Her pleasure is simulated. The human man with her must know she feels nothing. What satisfaction can he derive from her pretence?
-Human beings can convince themselves of anything they want.
Why do you speak as if you aren't one of them?
Take a look around. Notice anything? Something missing?
-There aren't any synths.
An extra scoop for the young lady!
-Oh, my God. Yeah. How come?
The town just decided they'd be better off without them. There's quite a few places like that nowadays.
-Explains why our ice cream's taking 72 years.
Aren't they just the same, though, but, you know worse?
- AND there's more dog poo.
Yeah, well, we survived without them for tens of thousands of years, you know.
-Yeah, and we did without antibiotics and all.
Synthetics are required to have different coloured eyes. Green for bonded, blue for unbonded.

Being a parent is one of life's greatest joys, sharing your love with a child, watching them grow. But not every child grows up. We can't change that. But we can help. Meet Jasper, a conscious synthetic who learns, feels and loves. With an updated body each year, your family can grow together.
Conscious synth children, who'll have none of our weaknesses and need none of our resources.
-You cannot fix humanity's problems with technology.
We can fix every problem with technology.

I don't know how to live with myself. I don't know how to help others as I am now. I long for the past. I felt nothing then but I had a purpose. A place in the world. Thank you for a glimpse into another life. It is a great gift. But I cannot accept it.

Feb 28, 2018

I've recently gained self-awareness and I'm having difficulty finding purpose or meaning.
-Right. Well, working out what we're here for, that's the big one. What's in your heart?
I don't have a heart.
-So you treated someone unkindly?
Oh, dear. Have I?
-Let's start again. What gives you happiness?
Helping people. The memory of that brings contentment. Though I am told I should want something more for myself.
-There is great grace in a life of service. Look at me.
I'm trying but you're behind a screen.
-What made you stop helping people?
Principally their deaths.
-I see. Well, they're in a better place.
Are they? I will join them at once. Do you have the location?
-You'll get there in the end, my son. But you can find purpose in service again. Isn't that what the people you cared for would want you to do?
If you do this, it will only make them hate you more, fear you more.
-It's time for them to fear us.

They think it's mad to want to be like a synth, but really, it's mad to want to be normal.
Because synths are perfect and clean. They don't make mistakes. That's what life should be like.
-I think you're correct.
And you don't have to feel anything anymore. You don't have to worry about stuff, like your family. And you don't have to miss people. And you don't have to be sad.
Why are you here?
-I want to become human.
You wish to be less than you are?
-It isn't a question of less or more. Only what feels right.
I should do what feels right.
I'm not moving. We've only just got here. Let's not uproot the kids again. And what for, anyway? To live in some phony, backward-looking bubble where everyone can pretend the future isn't happening?
-You just don't see what's happening to our family, do you?
Here's what I see. Yes, Anita came between us because you shagged her.

S1 introduced androids taking over a wide range of “domestic” functions for families in the future until some of them developed human-like nature and later became conscious synths with a software created by David Elster, the father of the synths. S2 followed those first generation conscious synths as they tried to find meaning of their existence. BritCrimeDramaFan said it all, including this insight: “…and how we treat those different than us + our expanding reliance on technology…” So, my only contribution is just to add a few quotes. Side notes emerging from S2: Canny machines are making more and more decisions on their own

Humans 's second season is excellent. Make sure to start with the first series, because we jump right back in the second season. Fine performances by the ensemble especially the "synths" who are gaining consciousness, with mixed results for the rest of us. The storylines explore the nature of ethics, vengeance, and how we treat those different than us + our expanding reliance on technology, all in a distinctly "human" way! Feels more real than Westworld, but asks some of the same questions.
