Special sections are devoted to lullabies and dandling rhymes, toe rhymes, catches, charms, traditional streetcries, riddle verses, nursery maxims, and humorous ballads. The text is further enlivened by 600 illustrations, many of them eighteenth- and nineteenth-century woodcuts and engravings.

This collection was originally published in 1955 and it has not aged well. Some of the content is overtly racist.

More of an academic collection than a children's book. There are some vulgarities in the language.
