"The history of art is inseparable from the history of color. And what a fascinating story they tell together: one that brims with an all-star cast of characters, eye-opening details, and unexpected detours through the annals of human civilization and scientific discovery. Enter critically acclaimed writer and popular journalist Victoria Finlay, who here takes readers across the globe and over the centuries on a tour through the brilliant history of color in art. Written for newcomers to the subject and aspiring young artists alike, Finlay’s quest to uncover the origins and science of color will beguile readers of all ages with its warm and conversational style. Her rich narrative is illustrated in full color throughout with 166 major works of art—most from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum."--

A very accessible and beautifully photographed book about pigment and colour through the ages. If you have ever been curious about pigments over time, and what was used when, this is a great stepping off point.

We take color as pigment and dyes for granted, but this book will enhance your knowledge and appreciation for the history of color in our world.

This is a very enjoyable read. Even if you've read a lot of history and science, you will learn from this revealing story of how colors were discovered and what there significance to history and art has been.

Fascinating, quick/light reading. Clear science/chemistry of pigment and paint development. Lots of stories and interesting arc of historical development in and around the science of paint pigment discoveries.

Short illustrated chapters that cover the science of each color, historical significance, naming, etc. Lots of humor also. One can read cover-to-cover as I did, or pick and choose. Delightful! Wife reading it also.

A wonderful journey of the use of color in art from the chalk, earth and soot of prehistoric cave art to the development of new pigments and techniques that made possible photographs and eventually digital art.
