Excerpts from his diary demonstrate the benefits of writing one's own diary. Interesting tidbits along the years show how he's evolved. Made me think of how I've changed over the years, too. Humorous writing as usual.

He's a talented writer, that much is evident. But the character mostly stumbles around and snuffs cocaine and has no ambition, things just happen to him, he drifts along in life. I don't like this character, and that's just my personal preference. Is it realistic? Sadly, it is. But I want characters and stories to look up to, not another day just to feel despair for people throwing their lives away with sex and drugs and self harm.

Lots to love if you're already a Sedaris fan, as his diary (especially the later entries) are not that different from his other autobiographical works. I enjoyed hearing more about his life around the time that he was working on and releasing other books I've read. Laughed out loud while listening in my car many times, and I got a kick out of hearing familiar theme songs from NPR worked into the audiobook!

I highly recommend listening to the audio version of any of Sedaris' books. The text is funny on its own but he really delivers it well when reading. This is the first part of selected diary entries Sedaris has been keeping for the past forty years. There are some serious entries but many feature humor and absurdity in the everyday.
