As all of Edo flocks to see the work of the revered painter Hokusai, his daughter O-Ei toils diligently, creating the paintings sold under her father's name. Shy in public, in the studio O-Ei is brash and uninhibited. Seeking to come into her own as an artist, O-Ei sets out into the bustling city of Edo (present-day Tokyo), where she encounters spirits, dragons, con-men and traders.

Directed by Keiichi Hara (原 恵一) in 2015 based on the manga series written and illustrated by Hinako Sugiura (杉浦日向子), this Japanese animated historical film depicts the life of O-Ei---the talented daughter of the world famous Hokusai (葛飾北斎).
In producing the adaptation the director chose to focus on the character of O-Ei due to how her role becomes more important as the original manga progressed.
Original sequences were added during the middle and end of the movie.
The role of the blind younger sister, O-Nao, was also expanded.
Indeed, the blind sister seems to have enriched the film's poetic wonder.

The quality of animation is good, and the depiction of 18-century Edo (now Tokyo) interesting. However, I do find character development to be the film's weakest point.

Lovely and provoking, cynical and magical. Not for kids--but a real treat for grown-ups.
