Shortly after taking office, President Ronald Reagan authorized support of an anti-Sandinista force in Nicaragua, later known as the contras. Reagan felt that the Marxist Sandinistas posed a threat to the United States and that they would provide the Soviet Union with an entry into the Western hemisphere. Congress grew skeptical of Reagan's support for the contras, however, and passed the Boland Amendment limiting the funds that could be earmarked for Nicaragua. Undeterred, the Reagan administration secretly acquired funds through the sale of American-made weapons to Iran, which the United States officially considered hostile. In 1986, the Iran-Contra scandal came to the attention of the American public.
