In August 1957, Senator Strom Thurmond (D, SC) filibustered for 24 hours and 18 minutes against the civil rights bill that was moving through Congress, which he regarded as unconstitutional. Thurmond revealed in a 1984 interview that in order to prepare, he had dehydrated himself for several days beforehand. Despite his efforts, President Dwight Eisenhower signed the Civil Rights Act on September 9, 1957.
