In February 1945, U.S. and British forces attacked the German city of Dresden. The attack on Dresden, which took place near the very end of World War II, was the largest single display of British and American firepower. An estimated 35,000 German civilians were killed as Dresden was destroyed. The firebombing of Dresden remains controversial, as some scholars argue that the targeting of civilians and the amount of force used were unnecessary at this late stage in the war.
