During the Great Depression high unemployment rates and home foreclosures forced many Americans to live in makeshift tent colonies known as shantytowns. In 1932 World War I veterans assembled their own shantytown, dubbed Hooverville, outside of Washington, DC, to protest President Herbert Hoover's refusal to release wartime service bonuses early to veterans struggling during the economic crisis.
