In 1936, the SS Brazil departed from the United States, bound for South America in the first phase of President Franklin Roosevelt's Good Neighbor policy. At the inauguration of the steamship, Ambassador Breckenridge Long stated his hope that the Good Neighbor policy would establish closer economic ties between the United States and South America.
