Currently reading but have not finished. So far, I can't say I totally agree with all the controversy unless she is saying that she is not portraying anything in a realistic way. I don't think she is saying it is it is anything but a…

Check online for David Schmidt's criticism of the novel. While I have not read the book, I am a frequent visitor to Mexico. Schmidt's specific complaints are points that I too would have noticed, and objected to.

Didn’t think I’d enjoy the book but as I listened on into the story it got more intense.

This was an incredibly tough book to digest (audiobook). So many moments of absolute despair, but hope continued throughout. The voices in this story are absolutely authentic; the author was masterful in her writing and the character…

One of the litmus tests I use in judging a fiction book is whether the characters were well developed enough that I cared about them and what happened to them. I grew to care deeply about many of the characters in this book, and about…

I found this book absolutely gut wrenching, heartbreaking, but also a beautiful depiction of the strength of individuals and the willingness to help others while risking your own safety. As a reader who is not Latin American or…

Controversial for the wrong reasons. Cummins makes it seem like massacres of whole families are common in Mexico. Cummins also makes an incorrect depiction of Mexican immigrants and narcos. Lydia is woman with a well off family and cute…

One of those stories where the eventual fates of the characters are uncertain. When almost every moment is a cliff-hanger, the tension in the novel becomes unrelenting, even slightly draining on the reader. The emotional toll on the…

I think the marketing blurb on the cover describes it well - a modern re-telling of "The Grapes Of Wrath" for our time. Cummins has written a real page turner. I found the characters to be sympathetic, fully fleshed out and credible. At a…
