Three adolescent boys with a single goal: see a reallive naked girl. The result? Razor-sharp, rapid-fi re, and raunchy, of course. And beyond hilarious. Fifteen-year-old Matt Gratton and his two best friends, Coop and Sean, always set themselves a summertime goal. This year's? To see a real-live naked girl for the first time -- quite a challenge, given that none of the guys has the nerve to even ask a girl out on a date. But catching a girl in the buff starts to look easy compared to Matt's other summertime aspiration: to swim the 100-yard butterfly (the hardest stroke known to God or man) as a way to impress Kelly West, the sizzling new star of the swim team. In the spirit of Hollywood's blockbuster comedies, screenwriter-turned-YA-novelist Don Calame unleashes a true ode to the adolescent male: characters who are side-splittingly funny, sometimes crude, yet always full of heart.

After two boy books grounded in brutal realism (one about caring for a mentally ill parent, the other about accidentally killing a sibling), Swim the Fly was a welcome change, a comedy in the spirit of The Hangover (if the gentleman of that movie were teen boys on a swim team). Though I enjoyed the improbable escapades of the main character and his friends, the underlying messages of the book left me cold. Maybe I'm just a humorless feminist, but the boys of the book spend a good portion of the plot trying to see a girl naked (mostly in between masturbation jokes) and never does anyone point out to them that viewing women as bodies rather than people may not be the greatest idea. The girls let in on this plot LAUGH. Ha, ha! Worse, the boys actually take a picture of girl in an, er, uncompromising position, and POST IT TO FACEBOOK. The consequences? None. As this is a textbook case of online bullying, I would have appreciated some nod to the fact that this incident was likely devastating to the girl in question. Alas, no. Not important. Also disappointing was the end, in which one of the boys makes a less than ethical ploy in the final swim meet...again with no consequences. Ultimately, this book - while a fun, light read - glorifies cheating, sexual harassment, and objectifying women, while completely minimizing any negative consequences that might arise from such activities. A shame.

The best word to describe this book is HILARIOUS!  Don Calame did what most writers consider impossible!  He has made a book funny from cover to cover and kept the reader locked into his every word until they hit the back cover.  I read this book in 2 days, laughing through every second of this fantastic book about 3 best friends as they set out in the summer to accomplish 1 goal - To see a real-live naked girl.  In between their comical screw ups, Matt somehow gets caught up in Ulf's swimming classes and falls in love with a new super hot girl on the swim team.  What he doesn't know is that another hot girl (who is the super hot girl's friend) has set her sights on him.  Who will he choose?  And will the boys complete their goal?  That you will have to find out on your own so race over to the library and GET THIS BOOK!

This book was soo annoyingly hilarious I had to stop reading so that I could actually make sense of what I'm reading and stop laughing. Meeting the author put a whole lot of new perspectives too because of the...things he's said. The inspirations he got, to write the whole story is even more hilarious.
