Good book :). but I just can't understand why the author made Elena so mean and self -fish. I imagined her to be nce and friendly. Anyway, I enjoyed the book and there were some suprising things in it which really made the story more intersting and realistic

Hey... Does the second book get better? I can't seem to get into the first considering.. it's a lot different then the show -_- but.. I really wanna read the series..

Being a fan of the TV series I decided to give the book a chance because everyone says, "The book is always better than the movie." After reading the book, I thought it was alright. I thought that Elena was too selfish and mean, making it harder to comprehend her image after watching the show and she was the complete opposite. Also, Stephan was too melancholy and not optimistic which disapointed me greatly.

I only really read this because I'm a fan of the TV show, when in all reality, I don't really like the book. It's cliche and predictable and Elena is hard to relate to. She wants everything to revolve around her and wants everything she can't have. The story seems to progress quite quickly and almost nonrealistic. It's worth a read if you're into the TV show.

The first two installments of the Vampire Diaries books, published in 1991, and stick to what most people know of the supernatural romance genre. They are very well written and pretty heartfelt but in many ways, typical. The struggle of Elena knowing both Salvatore brothers is heartbreaking and entertaining.

Great Book! I love it sooooo much! Elena is really awesome, even though I thought thst she was spoiled. I love Stefan also. Similar books that I read are Shiver and Twilight. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book and the tv shows!

A good read. Wasn't very exciting and a bit predictable. Towards the end it was a little better.

Elana Gilbert, queen of her high school, sets her sights on the new boy at school, Stephan. He's from Italy, wears designer clothes, and drives the most drool-worthy car. She must have him. For some reason he completely ignores her, even when she corners him and forces him to talk to her. She can't believe it; no boy has ever slipped through her grips before! Stephan has a secret. Not just the "I'm a vampire and can't always control my thirst" secret, but also the secret that Elana looks exactly like the love of his life, Katherine. Katherine was not just any girl; she was the one who changed him in the first place! He does his best to avoid Elana because he really doesn't think he could control himself around her. This was the worst vampire novel I ever read - which many of you may not think is saying much, but I usually enjoy vampire YA. Elana is psychotic and completely self-involved. She only wanted to go out with Stephan because he was the new guy in town and everyone else was literally swooning over him. She constantly referred to herself as the “queen of the school”, and due to such a title she felt she had ownership over Stephan. She constantly said that she "wanted" him and the he "belonged" to her - very possessive. When Stephan ignores her at first she's so embarrassed and goes to extremes to keep her reputation in tact. Then, the first time Stephan actually talks to her – literally months after they met - she tells him that she loves him! The worse part is that Stephan can sort of hear her thoughts, and believes that she has such a strong personality, and is so admirable! Really?? In his 500 years he never came across someone more admirable? This book embodies everything that is wrong with vampire YA and gives the whole genre a bad name. It's amazing that someone read this series and though "hmm... this would make a great TV series". The TV series is good, but it's only because they changed the characters so much. Elana in the book is more like Caroline in the TV series, except she’s even more selfish.
