The powerful Church of Real Truth, in charge since the government fell, has sworn to reimburse citizens being harassed by the deceased. Enter Chess Putnam, a fully tattooed witch and freewheeling ghost hunter. She's got a real talent for banishing the wicked dead. But Chess is keeping a dark secret: She owes a lot of money to a murderous drug lord named Bump, who wants immediate payback in the form of a dangerous job that involves black magic, human sacrifice, a nefarious demonic creature, and enough wicked energy to wipe out a city of souls. Toss in lust for a rival gang leader and a dangerous attraction to Bump's ruthless enforcer, and Chess begins to wonder if the rush is really worth it. Hell, yeah.

Anyways, by half-way through the suspense of the plot really kicks butt! I was expecting a typical witch book but instead what I got is some horror UF with very exciting, clever, original, dark and gritty world building. A word of warning - there's lots of swearing. What really impresses me, she introduces a complete THUG with the horrible name “Terrible” who is described as perhaps ugly, scarred, enforcer for a drug dealer, and whose dialect infers lack of education YET everyone likes him and wants a HEA eventually with him. Besides Chess desperately NEEDS SOMEONE (like Terrible) TO TAKE CARE OF HER!!! It’s all about escape. The author brings it up constantly - drugs, casual sex, seclusion, and even her private tempting suicidal thoughts to just “let go” when her life is in danger. I can’t bring myself to dislike someone this sad. I think it takes gumption to pick a character that is sooooo mess up! I can’t believe SK won’t eventually evolve her character without some resolution of her pain/addictions. .
She as no historical sense: The new (post-ghostly genocide society) was created over 2,000 years ago but some things (events and ruins could onlt be if less than a century or two have passed. I have since completed reading thid book. VERY olf man remembers WWI. ghostly genocode abour 30 years ago but a book citation is dated 1997 After Truth (the genocide) and a society was refotmed imposibly fast after the obvious collapse of our societry: not enough plumbers electricians, truck drivers and mechanics, etc., in any given area. Wold take centuries to get back thw equivalent (magical) technology to what we have today. Fairly good action/mystery though.
Drug taking aside Cass is a lovely girl who just cant quite get the work-life balance going. She's a Church witch in a nasty dystopian world where God no longer has a place and the habit of getting involved with some shady characters.
