Hilary Davidson's The Next One to Fall takes place three months after the events of her debut novel, the Anthony Award-winning The Damage Done. Travel writer Lily Moore has been persuaded by her closest friend, photographer Jesse Robb, to visit Peru with him. Jesse is convinced that the trip will lure Lily out of her dark mood, but Lily is haunted by betrayal and loss. At Machu Picchu, the famous Lost City of the Incas, they discover a woman clinging to life at the bottom of an ancient stone staircase. Just before the woman dies, she tells Lily the name of the man who pushed her. When the local police investigate, the forensic evidence they find doesn't match what Lily knows. Unable to accept the official ruling of accidental death, Lily hunts down the wealthy man who was the dead woman's traveling companion and discovers a pattern of dead and missing women in his wake.Obsessed with getting justice for these women, Lily sets in motion a violent chain of events that will have devastating consequences.

This novel is set in Peru, mainly around Cusco and Machu Picchu, the Incan historical city. The main character, Lily Moore, is a travel writer who is North American, but now lives in Spain. Her sister has died recently and her friend Jesse, photographer, has convinced her to come on this trip with him. At Machu Picchu, they come across a woman who is dying and while Jesse goes for help, Lily tries to keep her conscious and listens to her final words accusing someone of hurting her. The police dismiss the accusations and Lily feels determined to find the truth and make sure someone pays for the woman's death. But as she digs deeper, she not only puts herself in danger, but she also has trouble figuring out who to believe. With kidnappings, shootings, and mental illness, this book has lots going on and should keep you glued to the page. The author has a similar background to the character, which is also interesting.

I so enjoyed Hilary Davidson's first book, so that I eagerly anticipated this one. While it is extremely similar to the first book (same characters, style, etc), the magic is missing. The plot exceeds all plausibilty, and I really didn't give two hoots for any of them after a while. Read 'The Damage Done', and I shall try her next novel, but this one...give it a pass.

A great page-turner for armchair travellers. Amazing descriptions with lots of historical information about Machu Picchu and Peru. Numerous twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. My only complaint: an almost cartoonish villain. I'd also suggest reading the author's first book, "The Damage Done", before this one (I didn't but wish I had).

"After her exciting debut in The Damage Done, it’s good to see that Canadian Hilary Davidson has upped the ante in her second novel. This is a solid cozy with a good, tight plot, and the setting and characterization take it to the next level." Margaret Cannon

A quick easy read mystery that takes place in Peru. Typical amateur sleuth story.
