Now, Maguire returns with the final installment in his transformative work, a thrilling and compulsively readable saga in which the fate of Oz is decided at last. . . . Once peaceful and prosperous, the spectacular Land of Oz is knotted with social unrest: The Emerald City is mounting an invasion of Munchkinland, Glinda is under house arrest, and the Cowardly Lion is on the run from the law. And look whoâ#128;#153;s knocking at the door. Itâ#128;#153;s none other than Dorothy. Yes. That Dorothy. Yet amidst all this chaos, Elphabaâ#128;#153;s granddaughter, the tiny green baby born at the close of Son of a Witch, has come of age. Now it is up to Rain to take up her broomâ#128;#148;and her legacyâ#128;#148;in an Oz wracked by war. The stirring, long-awaited conclusion to the bestselling series begun with Wicked, Out of Oz is a magical journey rife with revelations and reversals, reprisals and surprisesâ#128;#148;the hallmarks of the unique imagination of Gregory Maguire.

Add a CommentAnother terrific riff on the Wizard of Oz, which is seeming very pale indeed after Gregory Maguire's handling of the characters. Oz a very dark complicated place...
Gregory Maguire wraps up his epic Oz series with a grand, complex journey centered around Rain, grand-daughter of the famous? notorious? Elphaba, self-styled Wicked Witch of the West. As usual, Gregory weaves Baum's original tapestry into his work, while commenting with insight on politics, morality and human nature. The cast of characters is large, with just about all the players from the previous three books making appearances again, but Gregory skillfully brings them in without your having to go back and reread the books from years past to remember what's going on. It's a tour de force, and it's a very satisfying conclusion.
This book wrapped up the Wicked Years series wonderfully. Though I personally prefer Wicked more than its following books, this was still enjoyable.
A perfect end to finalize everything that had happened in the series. I recommend that you read the previous book to really experience the style and feel of each book. This book has become one of my favorites because it surprised me with its length and well developed story line. I believe it was worth reading and does a great job of flowing through different topics and times. I believe the book picks up with the introduction of Tip, midway through, and from that point I could not put this book down. This book accomplishes what every great series should make its readers do - Feel.
Maguire's final book in the fantastic Wicked Years series. While it isn't strictly required to read the books in order, I recommend that you do. The Oz in this universe isn't the magical place of Judy Garland. Political intrigue, racism, war and palace coupes figure into the narrative. Basically, this is a very adult Oz. This novel deals with Rain, the grandaughter of the Wicked Witch of the West, and through her various bloodlines heir to many thrones in Oz, which of course makes her a threat to the people sitting on those thrones now. Very enjoyable series, and the ending leaves a little opening should Maguire opt to tell more stories in this Oz.
