By age six, Lily was helping her father break horses. At fifteen, she left home to teach in a frontier town - riding five hundred miles on her pony to get to her post. She learned to drive a car, fly a plane, and with her husband, managed a vast ranch in Arizona. She raised two children, one of whom is Jeannette's memorable mother, Rosemary Smith Walls, unforgettably portrayed in The Glass Castle. Lily survived tornadoes, droughts, floods, the Great Depression, and the most heartbreaking personal tragedy. She bristled at prejudice of all kinds: against women, Native Americans, or anyone else who didn't fit the mold. Riveting and dramatic, Half Broke Horses will transfix readers. Add a CommentGreat book. Highly recommend
Great! But now I must retread The Glass Castle.
Great book! I loved The Glass Castle and was very excited to return to her unique voice as she tells her grandmother's exciting story in Half Broke Horses. I couldn't put it down!
Very accessible read, great for book clubs. Tells the story of a independent woman born at the start of the 20th century in a dirt house on a struggling Texas farm. She marries twice, operates a ranch, learns to fly an airplane, masters poker, runs a ranch, teaches local children and raises two children. A high spirited easy read.
Ditto - I enjoyed this book very much, the gritty realism of an inspired life. As much as I liked Lily Casey Smith, I am so glad that she was not my mother.
Beautifully written. Lovingly told family story of growing up in rural America during the depression and WW II. A story of resilience, fortitude and dealing with whatever is thrown at you.
I borrowed this book before her memoir the Glass House, and I think I enjoyed it more. They're both good, but I like the cadence of this one and felt the true grit of her grandmother who was an exceptional character... real or dramatized.
Almost as good as Glass Castle. Walls is a great writer...very easy to read.

I didn't think I could possibly enjoy this story of The Glass Castle author any more than I loved her first, but I did! Walls tells the story of her maternal grandmother, whom we are only given a brief glimse of in The Glass Castle. Half Broke Horses is just as rich in story and emotionally easier to read. A wonderful book!
